The beautiful hill station, and home of
peace (Shantinikitan) Kanda is situated at 1500-1900m above
sea level. Surrounded by beautiful mountains and terraced
fields it captivates the sense and imaginations of the
locals and visitors alike. Both the local people and the
visitors appreciate the beauty here and benefit from the
pure air and healthy environment that the mountain scenery
presents. According to legends, and the older inhabitants,
there once lived a local caste of Kanyal. Kanda is named
after this caste. The hills of Kanda are very attractive to
foreign visitors, and is often likened to the Swiss Alps.
Since 1988, KSS/ROSE has accommodated over 200 paying
guests, so called "ecotourists." The have come for around
the world, including the UK, the US, Australia, Canada,
Japan, and from many European countries.
Ecotourism is people centred, small scale,
community lead tourism that causes minimum negative side
effects. An ecotourist can travel in beautiful natural
environments without leaving a trace of his/her passage. It
affords maximum benefits to the host and guest communities
with high regard for environment and conservation. Other
names for ecotourism are sustainable tourism and cultural
and village tourism.
As well as the huge benefits for the
eco-tourists themselves, they indirectly help ROSE to
undertake different eco-friendly and socio-economic projects
to the advantage of the people living in the area.
Eco-tourist volunteers can also more directly help ROSE's
aims by bringing funding and/or expertise to assist in
theseprojects. The cost of a stay with ROSE is Rupees 350
($8 US/ 5 pounds sterling) per visitor per day. This covers
food (3 organic meals plus 5 teas), accommodation and
administration, and it also allows for a small donation
There is also a registration fee of Rs 3500 ($80 US/ 50
pounds sterling) with the application form. Concessions can
